What's the Middle Number in Tire Size
I've got about 52k miles on my car and I know that in the very near future i'll need to consider completely replacing all 4 of my tires. I'm actually a little worried that one of the tires has a slight cupping effect, but that's a story for another day. I guess no one really cares about slight cupping when they'll be replaced within the next few months.
In any event, that lead me to look at the tread on my ATV tires and see what kind of potential life span they have left. This post will help you understand more about tire sizes and understand which ones fit your vehicle, you'll also get an idea for how different tires sizes affect the riding of your ATV. ATV Tire Sizes Explained
How to understand the measurements of your tires has to be one of the most frequently asked questions about ATVs in general, it probably gets asked more often than how to purchase the right ATV (extremely important by the way).
So how are tire sizes displayed?
They come in a set of three individual numbers like the image below:
First number : represents the height of the tire when it's properly inflated. The unit of measurement is in inches.
Second number : represents the width of the tire when it's properly inflated. The unit of measurement is in inches.
Third number : represents the diameter of the rim this tire will fit. The unit of measure is in inches

Tire Sizes and Bolt Patterns for Your Particular ATV
The bolt pattern of your tire is not universal, but it can be narrowed down to three of the most common patterns which are the 3 Lug, the 4 Lug and 5 Lug – each one designed to look just like it sounds.
The 3 Lug can be best described by imagining a virtual circle in the middle of the tire and drawing a radius that extends out and around the center of that virtual circle. The center of the three lugs will pass directly through the radius that was drawn. See picture above for a visual.
An example measurement of a 3 Lug is 3/100. The three stands for "3 Lugs" and the 100 stands for the radius, in millimeters (mm), from the center virtual circle.
The 4 Lug follows the same concept as the name implies by utilizing 4 Lugs and uses the virtual circle in the middle. The 4 lugs are layed out around the virtual circle in a square shape and the center of the two lug holes directly across from each other pass through the center of the virtual circle. See picture above for visual.
An example measurement of a 4 Lug is 4/115 where the four stands for "4 Lugs" and the 115 stands for the distance between the center of the two lugs directly across from each other, in millimeters (mm). The line between the two lugs will also pass through the center of the virtual circle.
The 5 Lug can be a bit difficult to describe in words but i'll do my best. Following the same pattern, there are 5 Lugs that get used in this pattern, each one placed around the virtual circle. Imagine a line that is tangentially touching the virtual circle but goes from the back of one lug directly to the center of the lug across from it. See the picture above for the best visual.
An example measurement of a 5 Lug is 5/130 where the five stands for "5 Lugs" and the 130 stands for the distance, in millimeters (mm), between one lug and another directly across from it.
Putting Bigger Tires on Your ATV
It's easy to go out on the trails and get envious of the guys with the monstrous tires that are super meaty and look like they can climb straight up a wall with a 90 degree slope, but before you go out and buy those same tires thinking you can do the same as they can, you'll want to make sure your ATV can handle the same amount of stress that comes with larger tires.
The larger tires with the extremely pronounced grooves are great for getting through mud and other viscous terrain, but think of the amount of energy it takes for you to swim through that. It takes a lot!
It will also take that much more energy for your ATV to push through that. On top of that, your ATV will also need to be able to handle the added weight and height of your tires, which are usually a lot more than the standard stock tires.
So what are some parts you'll eventually have to upgrade?
Gearing Down – The taller your tire is, the higher the gear ratio will become. Larger tires take more effort to move one complete rotation than a smaller tire does. For those two reasons, you will lose low end torque and gain higher end speed.
This translates into lower acceleration from a stand still but much higher speeds as your ATV gains momentum.
In other words, you'll have to decide on what's more important to you, faster acceleration from a complete stop or a higher end top speed.
If acceleration is your answer, you'll want to consider changing your sprockets for a lower gear ratio (gearing down)
Current gear ratio:so how do you know what to gear down to if you don't know where you're currently at? Calculating gear ratio is pretty simple – sprockets (the gear looking things attached to your drive chain) are measured by the number of teeth they have.
You'll just divide the rear sprocket size by the front sprocket size to calculate your gear ratio. So as an example, my rear sprocket has 47 teeth and my front sprocket has 14. My gear ratio is 2.64. Below is a chart to easily calculate your gear ratio.
So again, if acceleration is more important to you than top end speed, you'll just have to purchase a smaller sprocket for the rear, or a larger sprocket for the front.
Pretty straightforward, right?
Drivetrain & Suspension – these components that come stock with your ATV just aren't built to handle the added stress that comes with rotating those larger tires as quickly as you'll need them to. These parts will quickly become stressed and will lead to failure much faster than anticipated.
You'll want to be proactive about replacing them with heavy duty axles, CV joints, shocks and other parts associated with the drivetrain and suspension. The worst time to replace these parts are when you've fried them from extreme overuse.
When To Replace Your Tires
Replacing your ATV tires isn't always the easiest thing to gauge, it's not like changing out the street tires on your car where they wear very evenly. ATV tires need to be manually checked as it's very uncommon to have the tread worn down to almost bald. The easiest and sometimes only way of telling if you should get new tires is by looking at the tread. If the tread is rounded out on the edges is most places, then it's time for a new set. I'd recommend replacing them all at the same time instead of one at a time.
